Register a Water Source and Record Water Data

How to register an abstraction or discharge point as a water source in preeco | nachhaltigkeit and then record withdrawal and discharge volumes as water records – the data basis for the water metrics under ESRS E3.

Before you can report water consumption, you need two things: a registered water source as an abstraction or discharge point, and the matching volumes as water records. From these individual records, the application calculates total withdrawal, discharge and consumption for each organisation and reporting period – the quantitative basis for ESRS E3.

Prerequisites

  • At least one organisation has been created; water sources are assigned to an organisation and, optionally, to a facility.
  • An active reporting period is selected in the top right, for example FY 2025.
  • You have edit permissions and the reporting period is not locked.

Open the page

  1. In the left menu, open the “Water and Marine Resources” group and click “Water Consumption”.
  2. The page is split into the metrics bar and the “Water Sources” and “Water Records” sections.

Step 1: Register the water source

  1. In the “Water Sources” section, click “Register Source”. The “Register Water Source” dialog opens on the right.
  2. In the “General” section, select the responsible “Organization” (mandatory field). Only then does the “Facility” field become active; it is optional – the note reads “Optional — leave blank for org-level source.”
  3. Enter the “Source name” (mandatory field), for example Rhine River Intake.
  4. Select the “Source type” (mandatory field): “Surface Water”, “Groundwater”, “Rainwater”, “Seawater”, “Third-party / Municipal”, “Produced Water”, “Other” or “Not applicable”.
  5. Set the “Operational status” using the radio buttons: “Active” (default), “Inactive”, “Planned” or “Decommissioned”.
  6. Click “Create”. Use “Cancel” to discard your entries.

The source appears in the “Water Sources” table (filtered to “Status: Active” by default) and is now available for selection when you record water data. If the facility of the source is classified as at risk from water stress, the source is marked accordingly in the “Stress” column.

Step 2: Record the water data

  1. In the “Water Records” section, click “Add Water Record” – alternatively, use the “Water Records” section on the detail page of a water source. The “Add Water Record” dialog opens on the right.
  2. In the “Source” section, check the selected “Water source” together with its source type and stress status.
  3. In the “Measurement” section, choose the “Record type”: “Withdrawal” (default) or “Discharge”.
  4. Enter the “Volume” and the “Unit” (both mandatory fields): (default), L, US gal or ML. The note reads “Values are converted to m³ on save.”
  5. Select the “Water quality”“Freshwater”, “Brackish”, “Saline” or “Other” – and enter the measurement period in “Period start” and “Period end” (mandatory fields).
  6. In the “Data quality” section, select the “Data quality” (mandatory field): “Measured” (default), “Estimated” or “Modelled”.
  7. In the “Recycled / Reused” section, specify with “Yes” or “No” whether the volume is recycled or reused. The note reads “Contributes to Para. 28(c) recycled total.”
  8. Optionally, upload evidence in the “Supporting documents” section via “Choose File” (“PDF, JPG, PNG · Max 20 MB per file · Max 10 files”) and enter “Notes”.
  9. Click “Create”. Use “Cancel” to discard your entries.

What happens next

  • The record appears in the “Water Records” tables on both the index page and the source page with the lock status “Unlocked”.
  • The organisation's period totals and the metrics bar are recalculated automatically.
  • The source summary showing “Total Withdrawn” and “Total Discharged” is updated.

Practical tip: create exactly one source per physical abstraction or discharge point, and leave the facility blank only where the volume genuinely cannot be attributed to a single site – the “Stressed Areas” metric relies on the facility of the source and stays empty without that assignment.
