Create a climate target

A climate target documents a measurable reduction target with a base year, a target year and a target pathway. preeco | nachhaltigkeit automatically calculates the percentage reduction target and the annual reduction rate from these values — the disclosure required by ESRS E1-4.

Prerequisites

• At least one organization has been created.
• For automatic adoption of the base value: emissions calculations for the base year and the selected scopes have already been recorded.

Step by step

1. In the left-hand menu, navigate to “Climate → Climate Targets”.
2. In the “Climate Targets” section, click “Define New Target” in the top right. The “New Climate Target” dialog opens.
3. In the “Basic Information” section, select the “Organization” and, optionally, the “Reporting Period”. Enter the “Target Name” (for example absolute reduction target for 2030), optionally a “Description”, and select the “Target Type” — “Absolute” or “Intensity”.
4. In the “Scope Coverage” section, mark the covered “GHG Scopes”: “Scope 1”, “Scope 2 (Location-Based)”, “Scope 2 (Market-Based)” and “Scope 3”.
5. Once the organization and reporting period are selected, the “Units of the Reporting Boundary” section appears. The “included entities” are loaded from the active reporting boundary and can be selected or deselected individually.
6. In the “Baseline” section, enter the “Base Year” and the “Emissions in Base Year (tCO2e)”; optionally describe the “Baseline Methodology”. If emissions data already exists for the base year and the selected scopes, the form shows the notice “Emissions data found” and adopts the value automatically.
7. In the “Target” section, enter the “Target Year” and the “Target Value (tCO2e)”. The target value must be lower than the base value.
8. In the “Milestones” section, optionally define interim targets via “Add Milestone” — each milestone with a “Milestone Year”, a “Milestone Value” and a “Description”. Use “Remove” to delete a milestone row.
9. If you are documenting a science-based target, activate “Is it a science-based target?” in the “Science-Based Target” section. Then record the “SBTi Validation Status” — “Not Submitted”, “Committed”, “Pending Validation”, “Approved” or “Rejected” — and the “SBTi Commitment Date”.
10. Click “Save Target”. Use “Cancel” to discard your entries.

Result

The new target appears with the status “Draft” in the “Climate Targets” table. The “Reduction” column shows the calculated percentage reduction target.

Practical tip

Record your overarching reduction target first — for example net zero by 2045 — and only then document scope-specific or site-specific interim targets. This keeps the target architecture consistent for external auditors from the outset.
