Assigning services and cookies – scan, template library and your own services

The “Scans” tab shows which cookies the scan found on your website. In the “Services” tab you click an unassigned cookie to assign it to a service in the “Assign a cookie” dialogue, add services “From the template library” together with their documented cookies, or create your own service with a purpose per language. After approval, preeco scans again every month.

The cookie banner blocks a cookie until consent only if the cookie is assigned to a service, and only assigned cookies appear in the cookie policy. The scan finds the cookies on your website; you assign them to services: from the scan, from the template library or as your own service.

Prerequisites

  • The cookie banner has been ordered (see “Setting up and ordering a cookie banner”).
  • Your user group has the “Edit” right for “Cookie banner”.

Review the scans

  1. Open the cookie banner under “Websites > Cookie banner” and switch to the “Scans” tab. For each scan, the table shows when and how it was started, how many pages and cookies it found, how many of them are new and how many are unassigned.
  2. Click a scan to see its result and the “Cookies found”, with domain, service and whether they were set before consent.
  3. Use “Start scan” to scan the website right away, for example after adding a new service. You receive a notification once the scan has finished.

After the scan, preeco assigns the cookies found to the services whose scripts set them. Whatever remains is listed in the “Services” tab under “Unassigned cookies”.

Assign unassigned cookies

  1. Switch to the “Services” tab. At the top are the “Categories” “Required”, “Preferences”, “Statistics” and “Marketing”, below them the “Unassigned cookies” and the “Services”.
  2. Click a cookie in the “Unassigned cookies” table. The “Assign a cookie” dialogue shows where it was found: domain, duration, set by and found on.
  3. Under “Mapping”, choose the “Service”. preeco suggests it based on the script that sets the cookie. A necessary cookie belongs to a service in the “Required” category.
  4. Click “Assign”.

Add a service from the template library

  1. In the “Services” section, click “New” and select “From the template library”.
  2. Tick the services your website uses, for example Google Analytics. Services you have already added are marked.
  3. Click “Add”. Each service lands in the category that fits it and brings its documented cookies along.

Create your own service

  1. In the “Services” section, click “New” and select “In-house service”.
  2. Enter the “Designation”, “Category” and “Provider”, and describe the “Purpose” in every language of the cookie banner. Visitors read the purpose in the language the cookie banner shows.
  3. Under “Script domains”, enter the domains the service loads content from, for example “widget.chatprovider.com”. The cookie banner assigns embedded content from these domains to the service.
  4. Click “Create”.

Open a service to edit it. There you add the third country and “The provider’s privacy policy” and, under “Documentation”, link the matching processing activity and data processing system. Select several services in the table to use the bulk actions “Change category” or “Remove”; the cookies of removed services count as unassigned again.

Practical tip

You can approve the cookie banner only once every service states its purpose in every language. After adding services, check the notice about missing service purposes at the top of the detail page. After approval, preeco scans your website automatically on the 1st of every month; new cookies then appear under “Unassigned cookies” again.
