From materiality to offsetting measure
The E4 module covers the entire biodiversity pathway: double materiality assessment, site-level sensitivity check, impact assessment for land use, species and ecosystems, dependencies on ecosystem services, and targets, measures, strategy and policies — consistently evidenced, versioned and audit-ready.
Double materiality assessment
Four sub-topics are assessed: drivers of biodiversity loss, state of species, state and extent of ecosystems, and ecosystem services. Impacts are captured manually, via checklist or through AI-supported impact detection, complemented by an AI-supported severity benchmark value. An approval workflow, materiality calculation with justification required for overrides, and a materiality matrix complete the process.
Site sensitivity check
One check is carried out per geocoded facility and reporting period, with a selectable check radius of 10, 25, 50 or 100 km. Neighbouring protected areas are identified via a spatial database query against the stored protected area dataset; hits are confirmed or rejected by the user and the sensitivity score is recalculated live — derived from distance weighting and protected area category across six distance bands, capped at 100 and classified as low, medium, high or critical. Further protected area references (including IUCN categories, Ramsar sites, Key Biodiversity Areas and UNESCO World Heritage Sites) can be added manually; overrides require a mandatory justification and supporting documents, can be reversed and retain the originally calculated score. A coverage gap view lists all facilities without a confirmed check.
Impact assessment
A parent dataset per facility and period brings together material sub-topics, the affected sensitive area, impact activities, driver categories, collection method, data type, monitoring frequency and baseline condition. Land use changes are recorded with type of change, source and target land type, area in hectares, permanence, reversibility, plus habitat fragmentation, structural connectivity and invasive species including affected area. Species impacts carry the scientific and German name, taxonomic group, IUCN threat category, type and severity of impact, population trend, endemism, legal protection and the number of affected individuals; AI-supported species research provides up to 50 rated suggestions with confidence and justification that are adopted individually.
Ecosystem dependencies
Dependencies are captured per business process — with position in the value chain, complete CICES v5.2 classification covering section, division, group and class, criticality, geographic reference, substitutability, ecosystem condition, degradation trend and likelihood, and the time horizon considered. The lifecycle runs from Draft through Active to Archived. AI-supported discovery proposes dependencies with confidence and a traceable derivation; adopted suggestions are created as drafts and pass through the completeness check.
Targets and measures
Eight target types range from "no net loss" and "net positive impact" through area-based and species-based targets to ecosystem services and the removal of invasive species. Targets can be linked to the goals of the Global Biodiversity Framework including the 30×30 conservation target and to the EU Biodiversity Strategy, and carry SBTN labelling with methodology details, scientific evidence, ecological thresholds and a classification within the mitigation hierarchy. Measures document expected and actual contribution, estimated and actual capital and operating expenditure and an effectiveness assessment; offsetting measures form separate datasets with objective, type of offset, area, direct and indirect costs, quality criteria, applied standards and details on the free, prior and informed consent of indigenous peoples.
Strategy and implementation plan
One dataset per reporting period states whether an implementation plan exists and whether it has been published, and describes the adaptation of strategy and business model, the response in own operations and across the value chain, and the assignment of impact drivers to the mitigation hierarchy. Investments and financial resources are documented with total amount, reference to the EU Taxonomy, handling of offsetting measures, governance and update process, progress measurement, governance approval with date and approving body, as well as challenges and references to the EU Biodiversity Strategy and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
Policies
Policies are managed with type, format, section reference, sub-topic coverage, scope of application, responsible role, third-party standards, stakeholder engagement, public availability and review date. Specific details cover supply chain traceability, sites located near sensitive areas, and sustainable land and sea use and deforestation. Lifecycle, coverage view and statements of absence make gaps visible.
